notechat server
Conference server is off-line temporarily.

Our Multi-User Conference (MUC) server has one general purpose conference (chat) room and can add additional rooms "on-demand".
Note: The room name is not case sensitive but allows non-alphanumerics, if you type: O!Play, you create a room by that name, not join the room oplay.
I bet that one caught a few people making typos. mrgreen

1. Chat Clients

The Wiki page chat plug-in here has problems with some browsers, so for now you need a chat room (IM) client.
The client you use should be able to connect with Jabber/XMPP (either name) servers to use our chat server.
The chat server here also runs protocol bridges to the AIM and MSN networks but they may have issues (untested).

If you have a client for iChat or Google Talk, you already have a "Jabber/XMPP" client.
If you have any of the major Linux distributions, you already have a "Jabber/XMPP" client.

If you don't have a suitable client on the device you want to use, pick from this list:

I prefer Gajim because of its easy to use room management features.

2. Chat Accounts

You will need an account on an IM network.
Our Jabber server does not allow on-line registration of client accounts.
There are many free, on-line, domains that offer Jabber client accounts.
Depending on which client you are using, it will probably have some way to "Discover" sites offering client accounts.

Public account services:

Pick one, register.

If decision challenged, use this one: https://register.jabber.org/(external link)

3. Chat Room URLs

For Jabber/XMPP access to the Jabber service here, the URL looks like an e-mail address.
<room-name> AT conference.jabber.minimodding.com

There is one, public, persistent, conference (chat) room available now, named: oplay
Which means the room URL is: oplay@conference.jabber.minimodding.com

If your client asks for a password to the room when you try to join it, leave the password field blank, it is a public room.

  • Other gateways, which may or may not work:
    • msn.jabber.minimodding.com
    • aim.jabber.minimodding.com

The room name will be the same.
If these work for you, you will be able to reach our room(s) from your msn account/msn client or
from your aim account/aim client.

Users of the iChat client and Google Talk client are "ready to go" - those are XMPP clients.

4. HowTo - Pidgin

All clients should be similar in principle, which is:

  • Connect the client to your client account
  • "Join" the room (group, chat, whatever_your_client_calls_it)

4.1. First use

If you have never used Pidgin on your current machine, it will ask you for your client account information.
It does that by bringing up the following form:

4.2. Continue

  • Buddy List > Accounts > Manage > Add
  • Add Account : Basic
    • Protocol : XMPP (some clients might call it Jabber)
    • Username : Your client account username
    • Domain : Your client account domain name (I.E: jabber.org)
    • Resource : Your choice, "Home" or "Work" or whatever will do.
    • Password : Your client account password
    • Local alias : Your "screen name" - Use your MiniModding.com username please.
  • Add Account : Advanced
    • Require SSL/TLS - NO
    • Force old SSL - NO
    • Allow plaintext auth over unencrypted streams - NO
    • Connect port: 5222
    • Connect server : blank (or whatever you need if firewall challenged location)
    • File transfer proxies : as needed (default should work)
    • Proxy type : as needed (default should work)
  • Save

4.3. Connect

Connect to your client account now if not already connected during the above process.

4.4. Join

  • Buddy List > Buddies > Join a Chat
  • Join a Chat
    • Account : The client account you want to use (probably the one above)
    • Room : oplay
    • Server : conference.jabber.minimodding.com
    • Handle : Your MiniModding.com user name please.
    • Password : <leave this blank, it is a public room>
  • Click Join
  • TYPE SOMETHING Not all clients will notify the user that you have just showed up until you type something. mrgreen

noteWelcome
This conference (chat) room is open to the general public.
Although it would be nice if you joined our site here also.

IRC

There's also an IRC channel devoted to the o!play on freenode:

server: irc.freenode.com
channel: #o!play

IRC

Ah, yes there is - but I haven't been able to get the IRC plugin for this site package to work.
Since the Jabber server is part of the hosting package anyway - I turned it on instead of fixing the IRC plugin.
Path of least resistance.

IRC

Just checked for the channel, wasn't there. So either it's not very busy or abandoned from time to time.

IRC

The member that posted the channel information claims that a full time job + three full time courses cut into his hobby time.
He also mentions something about a: "life" - whatever that is. mrgreen
